The financial scandals of Enron and Worldcom made the need for corporate governance painfully clear and reinforced the call for defining and implementing decent IT Governance.
Although the need is clear, we see that:
- IT projects become increasingly bulky and complex. Such projects have to be managed very carefully, as they can have a major impact on the activities of the company as a whole. Recently conducted studies show that many projects do not achieve the goals that had been set initially. The rate of failure varies from 40 to 70%, depending on the source and the way in which they were carried out (in-house or entrusted to third parties).
- IT Governance addresses all elements leading to malfunctioning IT by rigorous management of the values, the risks, the performance and the resources. Better IT Governance also improves the alignment of the IT department to the objectives of the company.
The practical use, in alignment with the overall objectives of the company, of frameworks, methodologies and standards such as ITIL, CMMi and CobiT largely helps to providing a solid foundation for decent IT Governance.
Background information on each of the frameworks can be retrieved in the Content Overview section below. In the following chapters, the various frameworks are commented upon and put into perspective, as part of our global service offering.
